What is Evangelism ?

What is Evangelism?

So many people ask us here at Faithfire Christian Ministries Ireland 'What is Evangelism?' The Evangelist is a calling from God. Pure and simple, there are many who know of church hierarchy, that there are Bishops, Archbishops, Reverends and Vicars, lay-preachers etc. However, this is not how the Bible depicts leadership and callings. The apostle Paul advises of God’s ministry callings, and what these people’s offices are for. This is enacted in the book of Ephesians Ch 4 V 11 and 12. “11. And He have some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers. 12 “for the equipping of the saints (believers in Jesus Christ) for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ. (NASB).

The Apostle: is a calling and an office. This is from the Greek word ‘apostello’ meaning a messenger or a person sent on a mission. The apostle is a gifting (calling) through the Holy Spirit. This is a person who initiates moral rectitude, an encourager and teacher sent to the churches. An apostle may be a person who plants and establishes churches; corrects errancy, and an overseer of churches, a mediator of conflict.

The Prophet: the office of a prophet is a most interesting calling. These people receive messages from God, in spoken word from the Holy Spirit, in visions and in dreams. These are for the edification and exhortation of the saints. The Bible itself is a book, full of prophesy; the foretelling of events. This is why you can trust it. It speaks of times past, the present day (where in Daniel Ch 12 V 4 where it says at the time of the end “But as for you Daniel, conceal these words and seal up the book until the end of time; many will go back and forth, and knowledge will increase. Look how knowledge is increasing in our age; it’s exponential. It speaks of the future; you can read the Book of Daniel and Revelation (the book of the apocalypse) for yourself. (There are good books for explaining the end-times).

The Evangelist: According to the Cambridge dictionary this is “a person who tries to persuade people to become Christians, often by travelling and organizing religious meetings”. The apostle Paul was an Apostle and very much an evangelist, as well as a great teacher. The Evangelist is one brings the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This can be a missionary appointing; or an international calling, as is Faithfire Christian Ministries Ireland’s calling. Evangelism can be in written tract form, verbal (one to one), on the streets (preaching), organized events (in tents, hotels), even as acts of kindness to the needy. The late German evangelist Reinhard Bonke, once preached to 1.6 million African people at a meeting in Lagos (Nigeria).

The Pastor: Somehow a pastor appears to relate more to the protestant tradition. However, this term also applies to a vicar or reverend; a person who could be called a shepherd of the people. (The term is reportedly from a Latin noun meaning shepherd). The pastor is a clergyman or woman who stewards, teaches, and counsels their flock (of people).

The Teacher: is a person responsible for communicating and expounding Bible truths. A person who trains and imparts the teaching and wisdom of God. Like the other callings, the teacher has divine authority (ministry) from God.

Note: A person may have more than one of the above callings in the body of Christ.
